Thanks Joanne, Johnny and Huda whose presentations I saw. Great ideas for implementation in the classroom. Need to put the powerpoints somewhere in the DRS so that we can refer to them next year. Cheers!
Session 2 - At the outset it seemed that music and values were very diverse entities, but it was through the music activity itself that we leant how to cooperate and work towards a common goal. A very enjoyable session indeed. The sharing on Circle Time was likewise very insightful. What we learnt on Wed (theory) was demonstrated in reality by the presenter. The standout point was that teachers have the power to foster different types of class climate for each lesson, so we must create the most safe environment that is all-inclusive of each pupil - Samuel
Excellent effort! Thank you for taking an active ownership in infusing values, SEL competencies within IP context! Now I can fully understand why the kids thoroughly enjoy your EL lessons! I had great fun during your sharing...... More importantly, thank you for sharing bright ideas and strategies on how to engage our students in both academic area and character development. Thank you, Joanne!
I learnt a lot from fellow teachers during the learning fest. I think it is good that we can learn from within our school community. It was also good to share so that fellow teachers can help to further improve on the teaching practices.
well done and thank you colleagues for sharing! :)
Group 5 Things learnt: 1) Hands-on activities that we can conduct for our students in class. 2) We also gained some ideas on how other teachers conduct their lessons in their subject areas. 3) We have learnt the different ideas on how to conduct circle time.
I enjoyed the learning fest thoroughly! (Joyce, Weiling, Joanne)
Thank you teachers for the well-planned and relevant sharing. Jo: Thanks for giving thoughts to how to "manage" our expectations. The Amazing Race is indeed a holistic approach to SEL!; To Joyce, for teaching us how to be patient and still put on a smile when we have difficulty reaching out to certain students; To Weiling, for giving us an experiential learning on the tone of circle time.
Thanks too to Sam, who has help to be the time keeper and pace the sessions well :)
Session 4 Amazing Race. The presenter's enthusiam was infectious. We learnt how as teachers we can truly set the tone for our students' desire to learn. I thought that the benefits of the event were manifold - not only did the Sec 1s learn but the organising class 303 also gained a great deal! Well done! - Samuel
Music (Joyce) - Patience : to be patient with your classmates who may not be as fast in grasping the concepts taught - Respect : to not laugh at your classmates when they did not get the rhythm right
Circle time ( Wei Ling) - respect : to listen attentively when one is talking - teachers should ensure that the students will feel comfortable participating
Amazing Race (Joanne) - An avenue for students to unleash their potential - Possible student-initiated event
Thank you for your interesting lesson on how to engage students in music!
Indeed, "tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I understand."
I especially like the idea where you'll deliberately boost the esteem of the child by giving them do-able task (yet interesting) as a 'hook' activity :)
For once (throughout my entire life), I think I find music interesting and i can appreciate music! Finally!
Thank you for enlightening me on how powerful a teacher can be (be it in the positive or negative sense)!
When you were the grumpy teacher who conducts Circle Time and you 'greeted' the class with scoldings and complains...... as a student, I really feel kinda lousy. I also begin to reflect and feel guilty because I do that sometimes...... (-_-)
I did not realise that this approach can such a great impact on the kids (generating the 'sian-ness' amongst the students), until I really experience it myself! It can really be a huge turn off!
Indeed, I'm able to better appreciate the following, after witnessing the caring Wei Ling and the grumpy Wei Ling......
I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my personal approach that creates the climate. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal.
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized. -Haim Ginott

Dear Anisa, Suriya, Sam, Irene, Rubiah
ReplyDeleteThank you for the excellent Learning Fest. Indeed, it helps us to reflect and provides a platform where we can learn from our outstanding colleagues!
Should consider extending invitation to other fellow schools and showcase our talented teachers to them!
Of course, not to forget your scrumptious tea-break!
Wow! Thank you Joyce for teaching me music. Now I can make some sense of minims, quaver, etc. yeah! Thank you.
